The Hub

The Somerset Adult Social Care Learning & Development Hub
Last year on the 16th of September 2009 the Somerset Adult Social Care Learning & Development Hub was launched. The idea behind developing this exciting new project was to bring together disabled people's experience, knowledge and skills to help inform & develop the learning of Adult Social Care staff in Somerset and share best practice around user involvement.

Currently the Hub meets every two months and is made up of disabled people with an interest in or experience of learning and staff development.

Some examples of work that the Hub might be involved in include:

  • Advising on content and evaluation of training courses
  • Working with social work students
  • Involvement in creative forms of learning such as the arts, drama, images, film
  •

What have we done so far

    Social Care Governance Work Book

Although the Hub is still very much in its infancy there have already been opportunities for people to use their skills and experiences. One of these opportunities entailed members of the Hub reviewing a section of the Social Care Governance Work Book. The purpose of this work book is to get Adult Social Care teams to reflect on and evaluate their practice and make changes where needed.

Following on from this there will be a Social Care Governance Writing Workshop that aims to gain the perspective and experiences of people who use services in written format. These will be used as case studies to help Adult Social Care staff to improve their understanding of disabled people.

‘Can you make it happen?’ film project

Right from the start of this project we also wanted to look at developing a variety of materials to be used in the learning and development of Adult Social Care Staff and to this end members of the Hub have been involved in a film project with three 2nd year media students from Bridgwater College. The two short documentary style films are entitled ‘Can you make it happen?’ It’s hoped that the film will convey the message of every disabled person’s right to choice, control & independence.
